Featuring Miami Based Granddad Jacks Craft Distillery

10/01/2019

Granddad Jacks craft distillery is a 90-year-old Miami, Australia based distillers of classic Gin & Whiskey.

Granddad Jacks Craft Distillery was founded by David Goulding a.k.a ‘Granddad Jack’ 90 years ago at Gold Coast, Australia. This distillery has a legacy that is 93 years in the making. David was born on the 11th June 1919 in a small South Island town in New Zealand called Timaru.  At the age of 13, Granddad Jack and his friend set out on an epic 65-mile journey riding their bikes to a sheep station looking for work. They carried a water bottle comprising of a Billy made from a small size syrup tin, two tobacco tins for drinking cups of tea, milk, their lunch and of course Granddad Jacks homemade whiskey.  They arrived there at 3 o’clock showing very little sign of fatigue and legend has it that was due to the whiskey, there was something very special in their Whiskey.

This was considered a very appreciable performance considering the uphill grade of the journey and the story made the local paper. After several months working at the sheep station, Granddad Jack returned to the family home in Timaru.

The integrity, the hard work and a never-give-up attitude are what has founded the Granddad Jacks brand. This attitude is what guarantees the highest quality of Whiskey ever seen on the Gold Coast and what inspires all of the creativity that goes into every one of our Gin’s. Granddad Jack was indeed his own man. He worked hard all of his life and didn’t take too well to authority either, especially if he didn’t agree with it, and his nature is something that has been inherited on to his great-grandson Luke.

Granddad Jack passed away at the ripe old age of 93 and up until that point, he had a Whisky every day, and They are certain he still does up in heaven. Now his great-grandson Luke “Riddo” Ridden continues the legacy by producing his own take on Granddad Jacks’ whiskey; an old family recipe that’s been kept a secret for close to 90 years.

Green House

Green House is a gentle botanical combination of cucumber, rosehip, lemon myrtle, grapefruit peel and juniper. This wine is a light, refreshing gin worthy of a Sunday session.

It is inspired by the love Granddad Jack had for gardening, especially in his greenhouse.

65 Miles

65 Miles is a fierce yet worthwhile assault on the senses. This wine is the ultimate testimony to Granddad Jack. It is a spiced heat balanced with juniper, but abrupt all the same.

At the ripe age of 13, Granddad Jack rode 65 miles to a sheep station looking for work to save the family home. Just like Granddad Jack, this gin speaks to the character and hard-arse nature of Granddad Jack.

Two Pencils

Two Pencils is a London Dry gin through and through. It is smooth and rich with proper juniper tones. It is enhanced with citrus or sweet liqueurs, this is the just-juniper-gin you’ve been craving.

Granddad Jack would go to the Timaru races and break a full pencil into two halves, sharpening each end and selling them for the same price as a full one to make a penny. This was the first time he had made money. This inspired name for their gin.
