Doolhof Wine Estate

20/06/2018

Doolhof Wine Estate is the premium grape producing vineyard.

The valley in which Doolhof lies is blessed with unique and varied terroirs. The microclimates, growing conditions and soil types make it ideal for growing wine grapes. The Doolhof Wine Estate lies between Bain’s Kloof and the Groenberg Mountain Range. The result is soils that are finer, more balanced and deeper than in the surrounding countryside with clay content evenly distributed. A combination of Malmesbury shale, homogenous Glenrosa and Clovelly soils ensure that the roots are able to descend to four metres or beyond. Doolhof_Wine_EstateWhile Doolhof has more than adequate irrigation, natural water retention is also very good, without any sign of permanent dampness. While the shape and exposure (topography) of the various parts of the Doolhof Wine Estate allow for several distinct microclimates, generally, Doolhof experiences cooler winters and moderate summers compared with the Wellington norm.

Roughly 40 of the farm’s 380 hectares are planted to vine. Soils, growing conditions and microclimates vary considerably across this large expanse (which reaches up into Bain’s Kloof), and each grape varietal is faithfully wedded to its ideal terroir. Two white varietals, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, are grown, with a substantial number of reds. They include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz. The white varietals are planted on the eastern slopes of the Groenberg, which allow the grapes cooler days and less direct sunlight. The late sunrise and early sunset also allow for a longer ripening process, enhancing the elegance of the award-winning wines. Meandering through Doolhof Wine Estate is the picturesque Kromme River, which is supplemented by Gawie-se-Water. The River Walk, which was created in 2007, allows visitors to enjoy the scenic views on offer at Doolhof. One can follow the meandering path for several kilometres and stop at any one of the designated picnic sites along the walk.  Visitors are welcome to enjoy a 10km walk through the vineyards. Doolhof, which is known for its mysterious hills and vales, is also home to many small mammals, including buck, porcupine, baboons and even leopard and who knows – you might even come across the Minotaur!

The Denizens of Doolhof Wine Club was formed to give members of the public the opportunity to access the wines directly from Doolhof, not only to receive Doolhof wine on a regular basis but also to receive certain freedoms and privileges to enjoy the Estate.

The Tasting Room @ Doolhof

The understated elegance of the cool, air-conditioned, blue and white Tasting Room at Doolhof Wine Estate provides the perfect foil to display their award-winning wines. It is situated in the original wagon house built in the late 19th century and, with light flowing in from its large windows and doors, invites guests to linger awhile to taste and purchase superb wines. A private tasting area situated at the end of the long room can be reserved for groups of six people. The service includes a tasting of seven or eight wines by Doolhof’s winemaker. Bookings are essential. A large terrace with cooling fountains and a shady garden, adjoins the Tasting Room, making it ideal for enjoying the light lunches on offer, or a quiet stroll through the gardens.
