Bordering the provincial town of Stellenbosch, affectionately known as “Little Europe”, Kleine Zalze provides an escape to a timeless era of Cape Dutch architecture, exquisite wine, fine dining and leisurely days spent with family and friends. Over 21 years ago, the Basson family ventured to a new world, building upon a 322-year winemaking legacy to create the next generation of estate-grown, artisan wines. The estate offers a variety of attractions, including Kleine Zalze’s award-winning wines, a critically acclaimed gourmet restaurant, breathtaking hiking and cycling routes, the world-renowned De Zalze golf course and a luxurious four-star Cape Dutch style lodge. Nearly 150 acres of the 740-acre estate are planted to Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet. The vineyard comprises a complex series of small blocks where varietals, clones, rootstocks and trellis systems are precisely matched with soils, topography, and sun and wind exposure. Labor intensive viticultural practices, including cane pruning, leaf thinning and hand harvesting have led to healthy, balanced vines that produce fruit crisp and elegant in character, yet distinctly Kleine Zalze. The winemaking philosophy is underpinned by a three-pronged strategy of nurturing and developing all the components involved in the process: the vineyards, the cellar, and the people. The vineyards are where all great wines are made and we leave no stone unturned to produce the best quality grapes. The cellar is responsible throughout the winemaking process for safeguarding our quality grapes to produce premium wines. The people involved in the whole process are what makes it all possible. To this avail, our directors and management are responsible for motivating and training the team to empower them to do their best.
