Jidvei

Jidvei is the largest Romanian producer of premium dry and medium dry white wines.

Wine

Jidvei is the largest Romanian wine producer, with over 2500 hectares situated in the Tarnave-Jidvei DOC wine region, located right in the middle of Transylvania, in-between the two Tarnava rivers. The plantations are situated at an altitude between 200-500 meters high, most of them being situated on slopes with southern or south-eastern aspect, which ensure optimal ripening conditions for the vines. The area has a plateau continental climate, with an annual average temperature of +9.8 degrees Celsius and average rainfall of 610-640 mm. The dominant soil type is brown soil composed mainly of clay, marl and gravel. All these characteristic make the area a perfect setting for crisp acidity whites and roses and elegant Traditional Method sparkling wines. The company was state-owned before 1989 and it became a private company (family business) in 1999. Since then, it grew its vineyard surface more than three times, completely modernized and expanded its winemaking facilities and reached an annual sale figure of over 12 million bottles at levels of quality from entry level to super-premium. The varieties planted in Jidvei’s vineyards are mostly white, both indigenous (Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala) and international (Sauvignon blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay, Traminer, Pinot Grigio, Riesling etc). Due to the average temperature’s increase in the past few years and to the technical developments that allow planting at altitudes over 400 meters, some black grape varieties found their place in Jidvei’s vineyard: Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, most of them being used for the company’s crisp roses, or, in the case of Pinot Noir for Traditional Method Sparkling wine.
