A small island off the far north-western coast of Scotland, the Isle of Harris is home to a community of less than 2,000 people. The Isle of Harris Distillery was founded by Anderson 'Burr' Bakewell, who has been deeply connected to the island for over 50 years. Watching the population decline over his many years of visiting Harris, his desire was to create something to hopefully reverse this decline. Burr\'s vision was to build a distillery in the heart of Harris which would strive to be the source of local, social and economic growth, as well as a source of pride, expressed through the making of exemplary spirits. The Isle of Harris Distillery officially opened its doors in late 2015, hosting the biggest ceilidh the island has ever seen, 7 years on it has created over 40 jobs on the island. The Isle of Harris Distillery is a whisky distillery that also makes gin. As a newly established distillery, ‘The Hearach’ single malt whisky is still maturing on the island. The first spirit was laid in casks in March 2016. In the meantime, we produce and sell our award winning Isle of Harris Gin, the inclusion of Sugar Kelp seaweed, hand-harvested sustainably by our diver Lewis Mackenzie from local sea-lochs, is the key botanical to express our island’s unique maritime nature.
