The Reynolds Wine Growers Vineyard is set amid the S. Mamede hills, in a place of immense beauty – five hundred acres of meadows streaked with green, gold and intense brown. The scenery is filled with sky and hills, oak and cork trees dotted like sheep across the landscape.
The one hundred acres of vines are planted on the hilltop, which provides adequate natural drainage and excellent sunlight. The soil is mostly shale. The undulations of the terrain make the temperature vary hugely from night to day, which promotes the best ripening conditions for the grapes.
Alicante Bouschet (The Reynolds main variety)
It was introduced in Portugal by the Reynolds family over a century and a half ago. Alicante Bouschet or Alicante Henri Bouschet is a wine grape variety that has been widely cultivated since 1866. It is a cross of Petit Bouschet (itself a cross of the very old variety Teinturier du Cher and Aramon) and Grenache.
Beside Alicante Bouschet others red and white portugueses varieties are cultivated, such as.
The Winery – The Perfect Place
The winery was built in an old barn used in the past as a cattle shed. The reconstruction and transformation of the house were made with the utmost respect for the original structure: thick stonewalls, chestnut wooden ceilings and slate floors. This is the perfect place for the production of excellent wines, with the average temperature below 20ºC and a continuous optimum level of humidity.
The huge French oak casks were made to order for this particular cellar by the famous French coopers Seguin Moreau: they are used for the fermentation, just as they are by the great Chateaux of the World. During the (delete grape) harvest, each variety is picked in small quantities. The grapes are not crushed but gravity takes over. This method requires hard and skilful manual work.
All Reynolds wines undergo the strictest controls. The entire process is supervised by the house winemaker Nelson Martins.
The full range of wines are always very well rated by the prestigious international wine magazines Wine Enthusiast & Robert Parker.
Reynolds wines are available on all continents. Its high quality has opened the doors of some of the best restaurants in the world.
Due to the high quality of the grapes, Reynolds wines are nearly free of sulphites. Wines are produced with fruit concentration and to the strictest hygienic standards to the wine to last for decades.
