Kleine Zalze’s award-winning wines are known for their distinctly South African character, boasting lively, full-bodied flavors that reflect the local climate and terroir. With their classical composition and complementary relationship with food, their wines ensure a refreshing experience reminiscent of the Stellenbosch countryside.
Kleine Zalze Winemaking Philosophy
Kleine Zalze winemaking philosophy is underpinned by a three-pronged strategy of nurturing and developing all the components involved in the process: the vineyards, the cellar, and the people. The vineyards are where all great wines are made and they leave no stone unturned to produce the best quality grapes.
The cellar is responsible throughout the winemaking process for safeguarding their quality grapes to produce premium wines.
The people involved in the whole process are what make it all possible. To this avail, their directors and management are responsible for motivating and training the team to empower them to do their best.

The winemaking team represents the depth of experience balanced by a youthful and adventurous energy, and a desire to explore new taste boundaries.
Alastair’s wine journey began in Stellenbosch when he was inspired to change his studies from horticulture to viticulture. He believes his time working in the varied conditions of Spain, New Zealand, the US and South Africa has helped him to focus on the ‘important’ elements, irrespective of the area or style of wines he was making.
Looking ahead, Alastair aims to consolidate on what Kleine Zalze has achieved so far and to contribute to Kleine Zalze’s identity both locally and internationally.
After studying viticulture at Elsenberg, Henning earned valuable experience at some leading farms in both the Stellenbosch and Robertson valleys. Henning has been with Kleine Zalze since 2006 and one of the highlights to date was for the estate to be awarded the 2009 Winemaker’s Choice award for Best Producer of the year. Henning’s continues to push the boundaries of quality at Kleine Zalze and is always striving for innovative techniques to improve the quality of Kleine Zalze.
Although initially not from a winemaking background, RJ was always intrigued by the science of winemaking and thus studied BSc. Agric Viticulture and Oenology at the university of Stellenbosch. He started his winemaking career at Nitida Cellars in Durbanville where he won the much coveted Diner’s Club Young winemaker of the year in 2010.
RJ has now been with Kleine Zalze since 2012 where he continues to impress with his meticulous attention to detail.
